Gijón implementing LEZ: advanced sensors for cleaner air
- Stakeholder
City of Gijón
- Sector
Urban
Challenge
Gijón needed to accelerate implementation of its Low Emission Zone (LEZ), set to be permanently enforced from January 2025, aiming to reduce urban emissions by 40 %. To ensure informed decision-making, a precise, distributed environmental monitoring solution was required to support this shift toward sustainable mobility.
Solution
A network of 8 bettair® sensors was deployed, strategically installed across key urban areas to collect real-time data on major pollutants: NO₂, O₃, CO, SO₂, PM₂.₅, and PM₁₀. This infrastructure enables accurate assessment of the incoming LEZ’s real impact, and informs data-driven environmental policies. (Based on details from the source)

Outcomes
The network of 8 sensors provides real-time information on key pollutants, enabling air quality tracking ahead of the full LEZ implementation.
With granular data on NO₂, CO, SO₂, and particulates, the City Council can assess restrictive measures’ impact and adapt urban planning swiftly.
The early system deployment enables evidence-based decision-making, bolsters LEZ credibility, and promotes healthier, more sustainable urban mobility.
