Infrastructure
Challenge
The organization of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games involves the development and modernization of infrastructures in a high mountain environment with extremely complex environmental conditions.
Cortina d’Ampezzo is located in an alpine region characterized by:
- Narrow valleys and irregular orography.
- Frequent thermal inversion phenomena in winter.
- Low natural dispersion of pollutants.
- Changing and demanding weather conditions.
During the construction phase of new ski lifts, accesses and equipment associated with competitions, there is an increase in the use of heavy machinery, transport of materials and traffic in sensitive areas. These activities can generate emissions of gases and fine particles that, under thermal inversion conditions, tend to accumulate near the ground.
The main challenge was to have a system capable of measuring air quality in real time, adapting to a high mountain environment, correlating pollutants with meteorological variables and providing reliable data for decision making.
Solution
To respond to this challenge, Bettair implemented an intelligent environmental monitoring network in strategic locations in Cortina d’Ampezzo, especially in areas linked to the construction of new ski lifts and developments associated with the Games.
The deployed solution includes:
- Advanced air quality stations.
- Integrated weather sensors.
- Autonomous power supply systems adapted to alpine conditions.
- Remote connectivity and continuous data transmission.
- Centralized digital platform for analysis and visualization.
The integration of environmental and meteorological data allows not only to measure pollutants, but also to understand how they behave according to altitude, wind and thermal variations typical of the alpine environment. The Bettair system provides 24/7 continuous monitoring, as well as real-time visualization, historical series and comparative analysis; a complete system for environmental monitoring.

Outcomes
Environmental control during construction; Continuous monitoring made it possible to assess the real impact of infrastructure works on air quality, anticipating accumulations of pollutants and facilitating operational adjustments before the risk increased.
Health and performance protection; The monitoring network helps to ensure safer conditions for workers, athletes, technical staff and the local population, reducing exposure to contaminants in a highly climate-sensitive environment.
Evidence-based management; The centralization of data in a digital platform allows for historical analysis, traceability and informed decisions, strengthening the sustainability of the Olympic project and its environmental legacy.
