Challenge

Rome ‘ s 2.8 million residents face major air pollution challenges. Traditional monitoring systems are expensive and offer little coverage, limiting real-time, local and relevant information. Citizens need accurate data close to their daily areas, but remote sites do not reflect the urban reality. The city is looking for a cost-effective, scalable and efficient solution to monitor and improve its air quality.

Solution

The MappingAir project uses the Bettair platform to change monitoring in Rome. With inexpensive and accurate sensors, together with advanced algorithms, pollution is mapped in high spatial and temporal resolution. The sensors, integrated into streetlights and street furniture, work with technological alliances to provide real-time data. This enables visualization, prediction and communication, helping to improve routes and reduce sources of pollution.

Outcomes

0

The implementation has allowed the identification of unknown pollution sources in different areas of Rome, thanks to high spatial and temporal resolution maps. This helps to better understand pollution patterns and hotspots in the city, facilitating targeted actions to reduce pollution and improve air quality in key areas.

0

Citizens can now access real-time data through a simple app, which recommends cleaner routes for walking, running or biking. This empowers residents to make informed decisions about their health and mobility, promoting more sustainable lifestyles in a healthy urban environment.

0

Municipal authorities use this data to assess the impact of environmental measures and plan civil works more accurately. Integration with Rome’ s Fiware-based smart city platform ensures scalable solutions and compatibility with future innovations, positioning Rome as a leading city in sustainability and urban technology.
