Challenge
Girona needed to overcome the limitations of its only reference station (XVPCA), which only measured PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂ and CO, and did not allow a granular view of urban air. The city needed a solution capable of a26> map critical areas in detail, identify links between traffic and pollution, and provide transparency citizen through data in real time accessible publicly.
Solution
Girona deployed a network of nodes bettair® connected by LoRaWAN and powered by solar panels. These devices measured particles in suspension (PM₁₀, PM₂. ₅), dioxide of nitrogen (NO₂) and ozone (O₃), as well as temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. All the information was centralized on a single platform in real time, accessible to the public within the framework of the project “Girona Ciutat Intel·ligent”

Outcomes
The network of 10 nodes made it possible to accurately identify areas of greater pollution linked to traffic, which empowered the City Council to design measures preventive and corrective efficient, backed by reliable and public data.
The implementation of LoRaWAN and solar energy significantly reduced the network’s operating costs and energy consumption, providing a sustainable and scalable solution for municipal environmental monitoring.
The unified and accessible platform promoted urban transparency, allowing citizens to check the quality of the air in different neighborhoods in real time, promoting environmental awareness and community participation.
