Duitama Smart: A cleaner air and decisions based on data

Challenge
Committed to sustainable development and its “Smart Duitama” strategy, the city faced the challenge of obtaining precise, continuous environmental data to support air quality management. Duitama needed a modern tool to monitor fine particles and key gases in real time, meeting EPA standards and providing transparent information to citizens. The goal was to strengthen data-driven decision-making and protect residents’ health against air pollution while advancing toward an intelligent, sustainable city model.
Solution
dnota’s partner and excluvive representative High Tec Environmental Ltda. implemented a next-generation Bettair® monitoring station in downtown Duitama. The system integrates high-precision sensors for PM₂.₅, PM₁₀, NO₂, O₃, CO, and SO₂, together with meteorological monitoring (temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind). Powered by solar energy and IoT connectivity, the station transmits real-time data to a platform accessible to both authorities and citizens. Its robust, aesthetic, and autonomous design ensures continuous operation, reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmental transparency.

Outcomes
The Bettair® system enabled continuous and reliable 24/7 monitoring, generating a robust database to evaluate trends, pollution episodes, and daily variations. Real-time data strengthens the municipal response to environmental risks and supports evidence-based urban planning.
The information is integrated into the “Smart Duitama” platform, enabling quick decisions on mobility and environmental management. Authorities can now validate the effectiveness of their public policies and design preventive actions tailored to local realities.
Citizens have access to up-to-date air quality data, fostering environmental awareness and social engagement. This project positions Duitama as a national benchmark in sustainability, urban innovation, and commitment to public health.

- Duitama has significant potential to improve its air quality through the proactive management of its main sources of pollution: heavy freight transport and its industrial park. As a key urban center in the Boyacá industrial corridor, the implementation of cleaner technologies and logistical reorganization could transform the municipality into a regional model of environmental management.
