Challenge
Castelldefels, lacking a local reference station, had limited insight into urban pollution in key areas such as schools, libraries, shopping centers, or ongoing public works. The city needed a distributed monitoring network to provide real‑time data for designing effective mobility and environmental protection policies, while fostering urban transparency.
Solution
The City Council deployed 19 ultra‑compact bettair® nodes, connected via 3G/4G and powered by main electric supply or solar panels. They measure up to 11 parameters in real‑time: NO₂, NO, O₃, CO, SO₂, CO₂, particulate matter (PMs), acoustic noise, temperature, pressure, and relative humidity. This wide and precise network covers the entire city, enabling detailed analyses and data access through a control panel or API for evidence‑based urban planning.

Outcomes
The network of 19 nodes provided a granular view of air quality across the city, enabling identification of critical areas and guiding mobility and environmental protection policies effectively.
Real‑time data access through a control panel or API facilitated interoperability with urban platforms, promoting integration into smart city systems and encouraging transparent management.
Thanks to this pioneering network, the Castelldefels City Council now has accurate information to make data‑driven decisions, moving toward a cleaner, healthier, and more resilient city.
