Challenge

Urban athletes face unique challenges due to exposure to air pollution during training. Elevated levels of pollutants and high respiration rates result in a high dose of harmful particles that can affect respiratory health and performance.

Traditional air quality networks lack the granularity needed to guide athletes on safe routes and optimal times to train. Zurich and RACC, sponsors of numerous marathons and sporting events, want to promote safer outdoor activities.

Solution

Several Bettair nodes were deployed in areas where urban runners regularly train, in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Donostia and Malaga. These devices provide real-time and localized data on pollutants such as PM₂.₅, PM₁₀ and NO₂.

Wearable sensors installed in strategic locations, integrated into applications, allow users to identify the least polluted routes for running, cycling and outdoor activities. By mapping air quality in key areas, Bettair helps optimize health and sports performance.

Its platform also provides recommendations on the best times to train, avoiding peak pollution hours. Thus, it combines advanced technology and actionable data for runners and planners to make informed decisions, promoting urban environments that support physical activity and public health.

Outcomes

0

Improved Information for Athletes; the availability of real-time street-level air quality data allows athletes to plan safer routes. Workouts are adjusted according to the conditions of the day, reducing exposure to dangerous levels of pollution and promoting long-term health.

0

Positive Impact on Health and Performance; the study reveals that, although sporting activity in urban areas has benefits, avoiding areas with high traffic and high pollution schedules helps to reduce risks. This allows maintaining the benefits of exercise while minimizing the harmful effects of exposure to pollutants.

0

Infrastructure for Future Improvements; the creation of dedicated trails away from traffic represents a step forward. Dedicated infrastructure can further decrease exposure to harmful particles, ensuring that athletes can train in a cleaner and safer environment, promoting a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
