Challenge
The Air Quality Control Agency of the Balearic Islands needed to adapt to the new Best Available Techniques (BAT) standards and the upcoming European Air Quality Directive. It was crucial to modernize the monitoring infrastructure, expanding precise and reliable coverage across Mallorca while supporting future initiatives such as the Low Emission Zone in Palma—without compromising data quality.
Solution
To meet the requirements, dnota installed a hybrid network consisting of 10 bettair® nodes across Palma’s historic district, alongside 8 reference AQMS stations, plus an additional node at Palma Airport. The sensors monitor key pollutants (NO₂, NO, O₃, CO, PM₁, PM₂.₅, PM₁₀) and meteorological parameters—achieving ozone uncertainty below 25 % and an R² above 0.85.
At a glance
· Red híbrida: 8 AQMS + 10 nodos Bettair.
· Compatible con LEZ a partir de enero de 2025.
· Cumple las normas CEN/TS 17660-1:2021 de precisión indicativa de la monitorización de gases.

Outcomes
Thanks to this hybrid network, the Balearic Islands meet European standards and advance plans for implementing the LEZ in Palma, becoming a benchmark in urban environmental monitoring.
Co-location with reference stations confirmed high data reliability, with ozone uncertainty below 25 % and R² above 0.85—validating the accuracy of the solution.
The hybrid network—efficient and scalable—provides a robust and cost-effective solution for advanced air quality monitoring, highlighting the Balearic Islands as a regional leader in environmental sustainability.
